Jake is our tree climber. He has always been our daredevil, but only if it is on his terms. He would jump off the top of the house..IF it was HIS idea but, if you told him to jump he would freak out and refuse.
It is normal for me to go throught the, "If Jake fell out of that tree right now, what would I do first? Run out there or 911?"
It is actually the family joke that as crazy as he is, when he did break his leg years ago, it wasn't some stunt that landed him with a thigh high cast, it was jumping....jumping out of the CAR!!!
Well, I say all of that to say, our boys need their space. They need trees to climb, ponds to fish in, and "woods" to build forts in. They are rough and tumble all the way. Well, now that we are thinking of moving to Florida, we have started to talk to the kids about the possibility of relocating.
So today at lunch I began to ask some questions to kind of feel them out and get their thoughts. I began to explain to them that right now we live in a house that is about 2000 sq ft and we have about 3/4 of an acre of property. With this information I asked them, "If you got to choose, would you rather live in a smaller house than we do now but have a little more yard or would you rather have a bigger house with a small yard?"
Jared started to speak but before he got a chance, Jake chimed in, "How about we get a medium house with a medium yard?"
I almost fell out of my chair. Here, I was trying to really connect and get some opinions from them and he instead offers up the only acceptable response.
Compromise.
Out of the mouth of 'Babes' comes the wisdom of the ages.
I have a feeling that compromise will be a well used word over the next few months if we decide to make the "big" move.
